WILLIAM O. FERREE
PRIVATE, CO C PA 102ND REGIMENT

William O. Ferree was born on March 10, 1835, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joshua and Jane Ferree.  He and Malinda Anderson were married on November 1, 1855 in Finleyville, Pa.  Squire Gaston performed the marriage. He resided in Limetown for at least five years prior to his enlistment in the Army.  He enlisted in Pittsburgh on August 27, 1861.  He served as a private in "C" Company, 102nd Pa. Vol. Infantry.  He served as a teamster, cook, and hospital nurse.  While serving, he contracted rheumatism which he noticed during the fall of 1862 in camp near Clear Spring, Maryland.  His hearing was affected while lying under batteries of siege pieces at Fredricksburg.  He would later receive a pension of as much as $20 monthly as these disabilities worsened over the years.  He was honorably discharged at a camp near Charleston, Virginia on September 3, 1864.  He resided in Limetown for about the next 15 years, then moved to Monongahela, where he lived until his death.  He was buried in Monongahela Cemetery on July 27, 1911.  William was 76 years old when he died.
