WHAT'S NEW
March 22, 2007
Another new descendant has been added to our list; Walt Knake and is
the gg grandson of James McGinn, who served with the Pa. 102nd regiment Co
L.
We will be posting further information at a later date. The
descendants list includes the burial place of James McGinn. (see
descendants page). Also, Walt provided me with additional ancestors who
served in other regiments. We will be posting more information about them in
the near future as Walt researches their military and personal history.
Here is a breif list: James McGinn,
fought in the Civil War with the 102nd Inf Reg from Sept 1, 1861 till his
discharge from same unit on June 28, 1865. James' brother, William McGinn,
served with the 10th PA Res Inf. Their first cousins, James Mullen and
Michael Mullen, served with the 36th PA inf Reg and the 139th PA Inf Reg.
respectively. James died at Andersonville after having been captured in the
battle of the Wilderness. He died on October 11, 1864. Michael was KIA on
April 2, 1865. I am not sure where he was killed and am still searching. Two
other cousins served, James O'Leary with the 106th PA Inf Res from 8/27/1861
to 3/26/1863 and his brother, Arthur, who served with the 3rd PA Heavy Art'y.
I am now in the process of transferring and formating our entire website
with Dreamweaver. It will be a more stable and professional looking website.
I have received many compliments on our website. I hope to make it
even better to read and navigate! Thank you all for your continued
support.

I want to pass on the following information to the descendants of
Christopher Brose. A seller on Ebay contacted me with an item for sale that
he says is an original document. Here is the information I was given.
eBay: Civil War PA Infantry Promotion Warrant to First Cpl. (item
200002642707 end time Jul-05-06 17:41:16 PDT
I do not know anything about the seller or the document as to it's
authenticity. That will be up to any interested parties to inquire.
In addition, after several attempts to re-format the page for Captain
DuVall, I have posted the original formatted page. Viewing will differ
on a variety of computers and if you are having problems with text over or
behind pictures I sincerely apologize. Using Front Page as a web page
software editor has it's shortcomings for which there seems not to be a
simple solution. I am hoping that in the near future I can convert our web
site with Dreamweaver software which should correct these various problems
and prove to be more stable.
I have re- arranged navigation for the "Soldier's Profiles" pages so
that they are easier to navigate. Each individuals page now has links to all
other soldier pages.
June 9, 2006
Today is posted in PDF format, the profile on Abel David J. Heastings, Captain Co M. This information was submitted by Clarence McAllister.
June 4, 2006
Today is posted the page on Captain Samuel M. DuVall, Pa. 102nd & Old 13th, CO E. . We are awaiting permission to publish a transcribed copy of one of the Captain's diary from July to October of 1864. Hopefully the owner of the diary will allow us to post it on our site. Susan Welsh & Dianne DuVall Vatalero provided the information and cemetery photos. The picture of Capt. DuVall was photocopied from John H. Niebaum's book on the Pittsburgh Washington Infantry.
Next to be posted will be new rosters pages that Clarence McAllister has generously provided. They are very colorful and nicely formatted.
Also, I am adding a new link on our "favorite links" page for the Anderson Zouaves. Note also I have updated the missing page on Milo & George Gibson. It has now been restored. Please email me with any questions or comments regarding mistakes, missing pages, &c.

Another soldier profile, Captain Duvall, will be posted in the very near future. Please check the website often as I am now working on the pages on a regular schedule. Again, I would like to ask our descendants and visitors that anyone having information or resource suggestions regarding the United States Sanitary Commission, please contact us. We appreciate any help you may have to offer. We are also looking for info on the Anderson Zouaves, 62nd N.Y. Vols
February 28, 2006
Today is posted all fourteen issues of the Old Pa. 13th Newspapers. They were provided to us by John Tierney, a 62nd New York State
Volunteers (Anderson Zouaves) researcher. John has been corresponding with me for over a year and has provided a great deal of information regarding the Pa. 102nd and Old 13th Reg't. His research often overlaps various regiments in the brigade and he has been very generous in sharing that information. If there is anyone who has information for the Anderson Zouaves, 62nd N. Y. Vols.
please email info@cwdpa102ndregimentvolinf.com

Today is posted John Keil, Pa. 102nd Regt, Co K. Along with John's bio, and photographs are links to relevant medical and military information. I have provided these in
PDF files for your convenience. If you are unable to access the PDF files, please email me and I can make the material available in MS Word. Gregg Mertens has graciously submitted the information on John Keil. I am sure you will find it interesting and informative. Soon to be posted, a copy of the "Souvenir, 50th Anniversary of 102nd Regt. Pa. Vet. Vol. (Old 13), August 17, 1861-1911". These pages contain the Pa. Old 13th Newspapers. These have graciously been provided by John Tierney who has done extensive research on another regiment and has been kind enough to share his resources, copy the material, create a
PDF file and send it to me from Australia; in other words, John saved me a lot of work!! This material is originally available from a library in the Pittsburgh Pa. area and I will be posting a link and address for that information as well. I know this publishing is greatly appreciated & we will all enjoy reading about "Our Boys in The Old Pa.13th".
February 10, 2006
This posting is to ask our members or anyone who can help locate information on the "Boys from Dravosburg". John Asmonga sent me an email asking for our help. He is interested in more information on several specific men from Co. C.: Jacob Kohl, dob. 1840; Henry M. Serena, dob c. 1841; John McBride, dob c. 1842; Robert Harrison, dob c. 1841; H. Kunkleman, dob c. 1839; George Householder. George Serena was Henry Serena' brother. George enlisted with Sickles Brigade in New York. John would like more information on the New York Regiments. You can email John at jasmonga@hotmail.com (no spam please). Any help will be greatly appreciated.
October 15, 2005
We have a new descendant, Michael C. Thompson. He will be providing more information on his great grandfather, Lieut. John Aiken of Co M., aka Captain Alonzo "John" Aiken. This soldier's name appears in John Niebaum's roster as Lieut. John Aiken, but his pension records indicate his rank as Captain. Also, I have received additional correspondence from Gregg Mertens regarding his ancestor John Keil of Co. K. He will be sending me more information about John and I will be posting his profile on our site just as soon as I receive it. Somehow I missed posting Gregg on our descendants list, but that has been corrected. I have noticed that some of the pictures are askew on the pages of J.B. Martin's diary. I will be correcting that in the very near future.
That is all for now. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions, additions, corrections, or ideas for our website.
August 30, 2005
Greetings to all descendants and visitors. A long time has passed since I last added to our pages. I have recently been contacted by the great- g-g grandson of Edward L. Hoon, Corporal CO H. Zack Hoon. He was not aware that there was a diary written by Corporal Hoon and was published in the North South Trader Magazine in November-December 1976. He contacted me because I had posted on our home page the diary was soon to be published on our site. It has been a long time coming, but is now on our website for all to read.
Diary of E. L. Hoon . I am waiting for more information about E. L. Hoon from Zack and will post that as soon as I receive it. There are other new members to be posted as well and I am going through my correspondence to find their names and place them on our ever growing descendants list. If I have missed anyone, please let me know so I can properly add your name to our list of descendants. Also, if I have incorrect or missing information, don't hesitate to call it to my attention. You will notice too I have changed the format for the Descendants page. Hopefully the list will be easier for everyone to read.
The "Minutes of Washington Infantry Veteran Corps. Organized- Jan. 30th, 1891", as provided to us by Tim Perkins, have also been posted; See the link on the home page or click here: "Wash Inf. Vet Corps".
As always, please email with any questions, additions, corrections. info@cwdpa102ndregimentvolinf.com.

My apologies to all as I have been remiss in getting news and new members listed on our website. I am now webmaster to four websites, adding to my workload. My side interests that include learning new software, Dreamweaver, learning to use the two new telescopes and trying my hand at astrophotography, has kept me preoccupied to say the least. I have every intention to dedicating more time to our site as it is, to me, the most important of all.
Today, I have a request from Angus Gunn regarding Captain John Large. He wants to contact Ken Large in order to exchange information about the Captain. I have been unable to locate Ken's address. Hopefully he will read this and get back to me with his address so I may pass it on to Angus. If anyone has knowledge of or is in contact with Ken, please write and let us know. The 102nd roster lists previously labeled "Officers" for each company have been corrected.
That is all for today.
July 20, 2004

Having heard from several new people in the last two months, I can tell you this much so far; Kathie Forbes is transcribing the diary of her Great-great grandfather Sergeant Lewis Cass White, Co H of the Pa.102nd regiment. {Lewis C. White is in the article of Pa.102nd Flags .} The information Kathie sends will be posted just as soon as it is received. Kathie also has some other information she is going to share, but I will leave it at that for now. A descendant of William Fails, Private, Co I, and of Matthias Shortencarrier of Co E; have contacted us as well. Another descendant is having some difficulty locating information on her Great-great grandfather, John S. McCandless, Corporal Co I. If anyone has information on this soldier, it would be greatly appreciated, and I will forward it. John S. McCandless died April 3, 1903 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery, Sect 12. Pittsburgh Pa. ( I will be adding this to the cemetery page at a later date). I am awaiting permission to list the descendants of the soldiers mentioned above on our website.
(Checking the roster in Niebaum I found only a similar name is listed,
Shorteneavier, Nathaniel, Private Co E).
June 5, 2004

I have placed links on the descendant's page so you may go directly to the soldier's photograph from there via link from the rank of the soldier. The links on the descendant's page from the soldier's name, are to direct you to his letters, diary or profile, &c. If I missed anyone please let me know. We are always updating as we receive new information. Let us know if you have any difficulty with the links or any other problems.

New today is a narrative on William B. Ferree, father of William S. Ferree of Co C., Pa 102nd regiment. This information is provided to us by Nancy Ferree Johnson, Great niece of Wm. S. Ferree.
We will soon be adding information from Richard A. Davis, about his Great grandfather, Sidney Morris Davis, who was in the U.S. 3rd Cavalry and a friend of William S. Ferree when they were children. From the hand-written manuscript from the diary and notes of Sydney M. Davis, a book was published by Sidney's descendants, called "Common Soldier Uncommon War, Life as a Cavalryman in the Civil War." Today is posted the VI and final article from the 1909 Pittsburgh Gazette Times. Many thanks to Clarence McAllister for his hard work and dedication in contributing to the Pennsylvania 102nd Regiment website.
April 7, 2004
Today is posted a grave stone of Wm. Ferree and his burial location in Finleyville, Pa. More information is forthcoming on Wm. Ferree, from two new members. Welcome to Nancy Ferree Johnson, great niece of Wm. S. Ferree, and Richard Davis who is the great-grandson of Sidney Morris Davis, who served in Co F of the U. S 3rd Calvary. All of Co F enlisted at Pittsburgh. Richard has information about Wm. Ferree and the surrounding area where Sidney and Wm. played together as boys. This is what Richard wrote to me recently:
Sidney wrote his book in 1871 and tried to get it published. He wrote that the reason the book was written was that there were no books available on the war! Also, I hadn't realized what an advantage he had until I read the notes from Willie Ferree. Sidney had served his printing apprenticeship at newspapers in Pittsburgh and Cleveland before he enlisted at the age of 20. He has a great writing style and a better vocabulary than I do. Besides the names of fellow members of his company, throughout his book at different camp sites, he will go to visit other Pa regiments when they are in his area. Ever since I read his book, I have wanted to get in touch with other descendants of the men he mentions. He also wrote of other friends who came from Limetown or Coal Bluff in other units. We will look forward to more information from Richard. I will be adding a page for Sidney Morris Davis and a brief description of the Pa 6th Calvary. So check back often.
April 6 2004

April 3 2004
The fourth article of the Pittsburgh Gazette Times is posted today. Once "tax season" is over and I get caught up I will be adding more of Chaplain Stewart's book. Clarence has indicated there are more Pgh. Gazette articles coming soon. The Wm. Ferree letter, transcribed by Monica B. and posted last month or so, has caught the interest of two new people who have a direct interest and knowledge of Wm.'s family and the surrounding community in which he lived. That information will be posted as soon as received. So check the site often.
Today chapter two of A. M. Stewart's Camp, March and Battle-Field is completed for your viewing in pdf format. The document is fully searchable and available for you to print. Once again, the transcription is verbatim; spellings and grammar have not been corrected. Chapter III will be available next week. In addition, article three of the Pittsburgh Gazette Times, 1909 is posted. Click on the links located on the Home Page. Don't miss reading these articles!! Thank you Clarence!!!

December 31, 2003
Only one more day left in the year 2003. Happy New Year, 2004 to all of our friends. May the new year be filled with peace and good will. Only one new item tonight just posted. Another few pages from John Niebaum's book. It is the list of soldiers who served in other regiments. I am going to try to insert links from the names of soldiers in both the pages from Niebaum's book that are posted, to any other page that has information about a particular soldier. This will take some time to complete but in the end provide even the smallest link to any document we have on our website. This is important to know where our ancestors were at a particular time. It will put a little better perspective on a soldiers life, especially for those who have little or no information.
December 26, 2003

December 11, 2003
Colonel John W. Patterson has been posted today.
December 8, 2003
Well, I've done it!! All links to all pages start at the Index page. There are no more table of contents pages. Easy navigation is fundamental to a successful website & we had two too many pages. Should you encounter any difficulty moving through the pages, and of course, if you have any suggestions to enable even better navigating, please don't hesitate to let us know. So there you go- happy navigating through our site, I hope. Colonel Patterson is next up-soon! Here in Maine, we are enjoying our first two winter storms, one after the other. Today, a beautiful sunny day, and the new fallen snow makes the scenery even more beautiful.
Pictured: Bass Harbor on Mount Desert Island, ME. & Where I live (& my dog, Mac)
December 5, 2003
Additional photos have been added to the soldiers photos pages; Clarence McAllister has added the photos of Col. Patterson & John Kaltenbaugh Staff & Co A-H respectively. We are working to get the full photo of Col. Patterson and an article written by Bill Phillis; next on the list for new additions. We were invited to have a link to our website placed on the Greater Pittsburgh Civil War Round Table website: http://www.grpghcwrt.org/ We in turn have posted a link to their site from Our Favorites page. Their website is very informative and for those who live in the greater Pittsburgh area, there are some interesting events on their schedule as well as links to other interesting Civil War websites.
December 4, 2003
J. B. Martin's 1862 diary is now completed and the entire diary is available in it's new format. The letter written by Isaac N. Hays is also back on the site. Look for the link on the index page or the Our Civil War Ancestors table of contents page. We have also begun to publish some news articles from various sources, so keep coming back as we will be posting these articles frequently. Most of these articles are being gleaned from the CD-Rom series from "News of the Day" 1806-1901 a series collected and produced on CD for the Butler County Library and Butler County Historical Society. The information from these articles and pertaining to the Civil War is a unique source, and likely not found elsewhere on paper. If you have, or have knowledge of any articles of interest, please contact us by email or snail mail. We welcome all contributions of information.

Not much new today - except -the diary of J. B. Martin is very near completion with the new format. I have been posting the new and deleting the old as each month is added. Only one more month to go and that should be posted by tomorrow. I think the new format is easier to read and I think (I hope) eliminated the pictures over text problem. Please let me know if it persists. A Butler Co. news article came my way from a friend in Pa. via email . It is especially interesting to those of us who have roots in the Butler Co. area. When or what paper it was printed is not known. However, some time last year I purchased a set of CDs of old newspaper articles and perhaps I can locate the origin of the article we just posted. We have also been busy cleaning up some of the pages that were not working well or flawed in some way, hopefully for easier reading and navigation. Hope everyone had a peaceful Thanksgiving.
November 19, 2003
More photographs of the Pa. 102nd Soldiers have been posted since the last update. There are more to be published soon. Also we will soon be posting information regarding Col. John Williams Patterson. An article regarding the death of the Colonel, May 5, 1864, has been published in the Wilderness Dispatch and was written by Bill Phillis. Bill has generously allowed us to publish this article as well as photographs of Colonel Patterson and the original wooden grave marker, that is now on display at the Chancellorsville Visitor center. We will provide additional information regarding the article and how a copy may be obtained. The Pa. 102nd rosters are also being posted. We have recently ended with a partial roster of Co D, but will be adding more within the week. You all have probably noticed that some of the pages of J. B. Martin's 1864 diary are either missing, (the month of April) or the text is covered by a picture. I am working to correct all of these errors very soon.

Previous updates of "what's new"
November 13, 2003
You will find a few more new pages, now that we have begun to post photographs. There are a lot to publish. The photographs will include all that are already on the soldier profile pages, as well as Co M and other staff, officers and privates. When these are completed, if you have any photographs that we don't, let us know and send them along so we can get them on the web site. Our goal is to get as many faces to go with the names of our ancestors. Our thanks goes out, once again, to Clarence McAllister for his continued help and dedication to get all the photos ready for publication.
November 11, 2003
We have begun to re-publish the Pa. 102nd Regiment Infantry Rosters. We will be concentrating on getting all the rosters on ASAP. They are in a easy format to download and view up close. When you click on the selected roster, it will come up in another pane and allow you to enlarge the view with a four-way button. We have also added a page for 212th Pa. Regiment, 6th H. A., submitted by Clarence McAllister. Another new addition is a generic email address to contact both Lynn Lepley and Jim Barker. We have done the change to eliminate some of the spam to our personal email addresses. All correspondence will be forwarded through the our server for the website. Thank you all again for your patience and suggestions related to the site.

Pa 102nd Post War Roster has been posted, again. Not only are the names listed, but the addresses of the Veterans as well. A great bit of information for those searching out their ancestors; though keep in mind we do not know the exact date of the roster and until we can be more specific, it's only a guess as to when this roster was written. I am working to post the Rosters from John Niebaum's Book, again. Thought I only had to do that twice !! The Samuel Myers letter is also back on our pages. That was a difficult letter to transcribe due to fading of the ink over the years. That's about it for tonight.

Just a few new additions: More In Our Favorite Links Page. A few more cemeteries with additional names of Soldiers of the Pa. 102nd and where they are buried. More will be added soon. If you have seen, in person or online, any burial sites for our Soldiers of the Pa. 102nd., please send them along with as much information as available from those listings and the name of the cemetery. If there is an online link, please include that as well. A bit more re-formatting on my part, hopefully for easier reading and navigation through our pages. Thank you all for your recent correspondence, it is always good to hear from you all. If anyone encounters any problems with pictures over text or difficulty reading of pages due to color effects, please let me know. A few of you have and I am trying to address those problems in a timely fashion. That is all for this time.

The 1864 diary of Charles Lepley, Private CO E. Pa 103rd Regiment Vol. Inf. has just been posted this evening. I will be including a brief history of the regiment soon, as well as a photo of his grave at Andersonville Cemetery. Charles and his family has been difficult to trace, but with patience and incredible circumstances, I have found him. Finding Charles was the reason I became interested in the Civil War 3 short years ago. I had many doubts about finding Charles but many thanks to my new found cousin, Penny Pollock who lives in Ca. Not only do we have his diary, but his photograph as well. One never knows where or when information may arrive, just one more reason to have patience and believe it will.

We are pleased welcome our newest descendant, Cliff Householder, who is a Great-grandson of Cpl. George W. Householder, Company C, Pa 102nd Regiment. We look forward to adding Cpl. Householder's profile to our web site.
In addition, I will be posting the rest of J. B. Martin's diary. You have no doubt noticed that some of the font sizes and paragraph spacing is not consistent throughout the diaries pages. I am working to correct the problem.
Well, here in Maine, summer is almost over But, there are still plenty of Lobstah!

Well, I know all of you are still waiting for the rest of J. B. Martin's diary. All I can say is it is summer and lots of company from away, or "flatlanders", as the real Mainers say!!
Thanks for your continued patience.
We have received some great information coming before the end of the year; a lot of really good stuff regarding Colonel Patterson as well as a transcribed version of the diary of Charles Lepley who is my (Lynn Lepley), Great-grand uncle. Charles was in the Pa 103rd and died in Andersonville Prison. His diary is from Jan 1864 to Sept. 1864, just days prior to his death. We also have his photo in uniform.
Welcome to our member Clarence McAllister, of Pittsburgh, who is a new member, whom I neglected to include his name on our descendants list until just recently. His Great-grand uncle, V. Thomas A. Heastings has just been posted today with two photos. Clarence has recently provided us with 40 + photos of the soldiers of Company M. We are hoping to get those posted ASAP. It took quite a lot of work to clean up the images (from photocopies) and copy them to a CD. A very professional job, I might add.
I am sure you all have noticed there are links on some of the pages that go nowhere! I will correct that problem soon.
So there you have it. Thank you all for you continued support. We always look forward to hearing from you.

WHAT'S NEW??? OUR LOCATION:
We have combined our previous two web sites into one. Our format has changed as we using different editor software. This new format will enable us to grow and add pages to this site more quickly, efficiently and incorporate a NEWSLETTER that our "members only" can access.
In the near future we will be adding more military and genealogical information as well as archival documents from various descendants & other resources.
Although the Pa. 102nd Regiment is our priority we will be featuring other Pennsylvania Regiments of the Civil War. And will include more letters, diaries, photographs and a whole lot more !! There is a partial list on our index page. If you have a particular regiment that interests you or have ancestors who fought in other Pa Regiments, please let us know and we will do our best to post information of your ancestor and a brief history of the regiment to which they fought.
Please email either Jim Barker or Lynn K. Lepley if you wish to submit your ancestors name and information. We answer all our mail in a timely fashion. Please feel free to ask questions and we will do our best to find the answer.
Our site has been offline for a time now..the cause of the "mysterious disappearing website" ...a mystery indeed!! We are back. not quite, but all will be returned soon. Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding.
