102ND REGIMENT

PENNSYLVANIA VOL INFANTRY

V. Thomas A. Heastings.  Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 16, 1843.

As a teenager he went to work with the Pennsylvania Railroad. As a brakeman he sustained many injuries. His last one was to his foot, it took a year to heal, and by that time he was in the Army. On August 19, 1861 he was enrolled in Company B, 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry Vol. On October 14, 1861 he was transferred to Company M.

At the time of his enrollment his description was as follows: age 18, height 5 foot 9 inches, light complexion, gray eyes, light hair, occupation Railroader.  Thomas was mustered out when he enlistment expired on September 6, 1864.

After returning home he married Annie Reynolds of Allegheny City. The couple had two boys.  Unfortunately they both die as teenagers.

Tom worked on the Railroad for a while and later became a stationary engineer with the New York Metalizing Co. in Pittsburgh.  At 7 am on the morning of 20 January 1912 started work a usually, he had to craw under the boilers and light them off for the days work. As he crawled out from under the boiler he had a heart attack.  Tom was dead when the other worker found him. At 70 years old Thomas died on the job.

 

 

 

Thomas Heastings is buried it the Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania  

Thomas is the Great-grand Uncle of Clarence McAllister who generously provided this information.
