Corporal Of Co. F, Pennsylvania 102nd Regt. Vol. Infantry

Mathew Heyl

Mathew Heyl signed the “Consent In Case Of Minor” form at age 19 and has the following written in his own hand.  “ I certify upon oath that I have the consent of my parents to enlist in the service of the United States.  August 20th 1862,  Mathew Heyl”.

Six days later, on August 26th, 1862, Lieut. A. M. Moreland accepted Mathew as a Volunteer from Pittsburgh and he was mustered as a private into “F” Co., of the Pennsylvania 102nd Regiment Volunteer Infantry.

In Sept & Oct., 1864 he was detailed as Provost Guard.  Mathew was promoted to Corporal on April 1, 1865.

Of interest to note; his muster out roll lists, “Bounty due $75.00  for gun and equip.  Retained under 4.1 #101 W. D. 1865.”  A family source states that Mathew told his children that he was charged money because his horse died.

Corporal Mathew Heyl was discharged under General Order on June 20, 1865.

Mathew Heyl was born November 5, 1842, in Butler, Pa.  He was the son of Sebastian Heyl and Margaret Lauer Heyl.  Mathew’s father was born in 1801, at Alsace, Germany and his mother was born in 1804, at Bavaria.  Sebastian & his wife Margaret emigrated from Germany, prior to 1832.

After the war, Mathew returned to his former occupation as a Segar (Cigar) maker, dealing in Leaf Tobacco.  His firm was located at 230 Liberty Street, Pittsburg, Pa.  He was active in his community and was **Commander of O. H. Rippley Post, No. 41, Grand Army of the Republic, having been a veteran of the Civil War.  He was in action at the battles of Cold Harbor, Antietam, and Gettysburg”.
