Camp Lincoln  Maridian Hill

September .21. A. D. 1861

Dear Brother Willie

I take my pen hand to address a few lines to you because I have not written to you yet.  I received a letter from George the 20. of Sept his letter was very Satisfactory and pleasing to me .  I understood in Georges letter that David was coming home the last of this month  if he comes home tell him I want him to write me a letter immediately and stay at home till I answer it which I will do with the greatest of pleasure.  There are still some rebels round here there was a man come here and told …. to the new york regiment joining us that had been poisoned  one of the men died and the rebel was not caught and one night afterwards they arrested two others that were going to the well to poison it  the were arrested but I have not heard what was done with them.

There are regiments joining our camp every day it is a nice sight to see the cavalry and artillery training but I have saw so much of it that it seems to be an old thing.  We have almost quit company drill now we can go through the manuel  of some pretty well  We put most of our time to regimental drill and drill by the double quick nearly all the time.  We have got used to it (that scratched out) so that it is not very ####### us.  This is payday in our regiment and I think that we will get some money very bad but for my part I am pretty well off I have ten dollars yet. (it scratched out) the company have spent about five hundred dollars for provisions just to satisfy their hunger besides the rations they get from the government   There are no movements of importance going on that I know of.  nothing more at present give me every thing special when you write.

                           Yours with respect

                      Lewis Z Kniess

Address the same (a. s. o.) as usual Company H 13th Vol R care capt Mclaughlin
