PRIVATE LEWIS W. HOLMES
 
Company I, Pa. 102nd Regiment Volunteer Infantry

    Lewis W. Holmes, enlisted as a private in Co  I of the Pennsylvania 102nd Regiment Volunteer
Infantry on August 16, 1861 in Pittsburgh Pa.
 
He was described as being 5 ft. 4 in. tall, weighing 115 lbs. He listed his occupation as a “painter”. Lewis was born in November 1841 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
 
Private Holmes re-enlisted in the Pa 102nd as a Veteran Volunteer on March 18, 1864, in Halltown, Virginia. In less than two months on May 5, 1864, Lewis was Killed “by reason of gunshot wounds received” in the Battle at Wilderness. The inventory of his personal effects had the notation that “the effects are in the hands of the enemy”. It is believed that Private Lewis Holmes is buried in an unmarked grave at the National Cemetery, Mayre’s    Heights, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
 
In the photo, taken in the early spring of 1864, Lewis is wearing his 6th Corps Badge and has the Cuff Chevron of a Veteran Volunteer on his frock coat.
 
A Brother of Lewis, Thomas Holmes, served with the Pennsylvania 136th Regiment.
 Lewis Holmes is the Great-great Grand Uncle & Thomas Holmes the Great-great-great Grandfather of Steven Simonson of Chester, Virginia, who has generously provided this information.
