LETTER WRITTEN BY JONATHAN FURMAN

“ E “ COMPANY, PA 102ND REGIMENT V. V. I.

Tuesday morning,  Sept. 22 1863.  I will ----- this letter in the office this morning. Yesterday the

Captain told me I could get a furlough toward the last of this week and I think I will but for how long I can't tell and it maybe a week or two before I get one at all but I expect to get one Friday or Saturday. I  fear it will be but a short one but I will do all I can to get a  ----  days.  Well we had the richest time in camp yesterday I ever saw. There has been a couple of ###### loitering in and about camp for some five or six weeks and they have frequently been ordered off  but still they  stayed about and yesterday the commanding officer sent a  squad out for them. In a few minutes they brought in the two girls and three men who were with them and made the whole five march round a ring like the track of a thrashing machine for two hours in the presence of hundreds of men. One of the men was  a Dutchman and was for resisting but was bayoneted up to the work and lieutenant struck him over the head several hard blows with his sword (sideways) which brought him to obedience of orders.  the other two were old soldiers and done as they were commanded to a letter the girls took it quite good naturedly or appeared to but they knew that they must obey. The wretches were then sent out of camp.
